SOUND SERIES is a small-format publication by Ningen that introduces musicians with
distinctive aesthetics and narratives who remain lesser known. This issue features Ikue
Mori, an artist who has developed her own language at the boundaries of noise, electronic
music, and improvisation. Born in Japan, Ikue Mori moved to New York in 1977 and began her
musical career as the drummer for the legendary no wave band DNA. She later abandoned the
drums to fully pursue electronic and experimental music using drum machines, laptops, and
samplers. Her sound consists of writhing, organic dissonance, intuitive rhythms spat out by
electronic devices, and strange silences. Treating the computer like a living organism, she
manipulates the shape and movement of sound with a visual sensibility, making her
performances resemble a kind of visual art.
